The honest version

Do you need an SEO agency, or can you do this yourself?

There's no universally right answer. It genuinely depends on your time, your budget, and your market. Here's how to work out which situation you're actually in.

The 15-second version

You probably want an agency if you have no spare time, a highly competitive market, or want SEO bundled with other marketing. You probably want DIY software if you have an hour or two a week, aren't ready for a $400+/month retainer, and run a single local or service business.

I run both kinds of business: an SEO agency, EightySix Digital, and EightySixOS, software for business owners doing their own SEO. I'm not writing this to steer you toward one over the other. Both are genuinely the right answer for different people, and the honest version of this question isn't “which is better”, it's “which one fits you”.

When an agency is the right call

When should you hire an SEO agency?

  • You genuinely have no time to spend on this, even an hour a week.
  • Your market is highly competitive and you need someone actively working it, not just monitoring it.
  • You want SEO combined with other channels (paid ads, content production, design) under one team.
  • You'd rather pay for outcomes and expertise than learn a new discipline yourself.

If that sounds like you, a real agency is genuinely the better call. My own agency, EightySix Digital, works with businesses in exactly this position.

When doing it yourself is the right call

When is DIY SEO software the right call?

  • You have some time, even if it's just an hour or two a week.
  • You're not ready to commit $400+ a month to an ongoing retainer.
  • You'd rather understand what's actually happening with your own website than hand it off entirely.
  • You run a single, local or service-based business, not a large or highly competitive multi-market brand.

If that's closer to your situation, EightySixOS is built for exactly this: a clear, prioritised plan for your own SEO, without needing to become an expert or commit to a retainer.

Questions

The honest answers.

Is this page going to tell me agencies are a waste of money?

No. A good agency earns its fee, and for plenty of businesses, especially in competitive markets or with genuinely no time to spare, it's the right call. This page is here to help you work out which situation you're actually in, not to talk you out of either option.

What does a typical SEO agency retainer cost?

It varies by market and scope, but a genuine ongoing retainer commonly starts around $400+ a month and can run into the thousands for a competitive or multi-location brand. See our full breakdown of SEO agency costs, or EightySix Digital's own SEO pricing for a real, current example.

Can I start with software and move to an agency later?

Yes, and it's a genuinely common path. Doing your own SEO for a while means you understand your own site and data, which makes any future conversation with an agency more useful, not less.

What if I want both, an agency and a way to keep an eye on things myself?

Some business owners do exactly that: an agency does the work, and they use EightySixOS to understand what's happening and ask questions about their own data between check-ins.
