Why your Google rankings won't move for months (and that's normal)

You made the fix. You reworked the title tag, tidied the page, fixed the broken links. Now you check your rankings every day, sometimes twice, and nothing moves. This is the single most common frustration in SEO, and almost none of it means the work didn't work.

Google is slow, deliberately

Before a change can affect your ranking, Google has to crawl the page again, process what changed, and decide whether that changes anything about where it sits against everything else competing for the same search. Each of those steps can take days on its own. Put together, weeks to months is normal, not a sign of failure.

There is no fixed timeline you can rely on. A small, well established site might see a change reflected in a couple of weeks. A newer site, or a bigger change, can take a full financial quarter to settle. Nobody, including Google, can promise you a date.

Checking your ranking daily is like watching a kettle you haven't plugged in.

What's actually worth watching while you wait

Rankings are a lagging signal. Long before they move, other things usually shift first:

• Impressions. Are you showing up for the search more often, even lower down the page?
• Indexing. Has Google actually recrawled and re-indexed the page you changed?
• Click-through rate. If impressions are steady but clicks aren't, your title and description might need work before your position does.

These show up in Search Console well before a ranking position does, and they tell you whether Google has even noticed your change yet.

What to actually do about it

Make the change, note the date, and check back in a few weeks, not tomorrow. If you want to know sooner whether Google has clocked it, check indexing status, not position. And if months genuinely pass with impressions flat and nothing changing at all, that is the point to look for a different problem, not to assume the first fix was wrong.
