What Google Search Console actually tells you (and what it doesn't)

Technical SEONovember 2026By 5 min read

Search Console is free, genuinely excellent, and also genuinely confusing the first time you open it. Nobody hands you a plain-English explanation of what you are actually looking at. Here is one.

What it actually shows you

Three reports do almost all the work.

Performance shows the searches your site already appears for, how often it is shown (impressions), how often people click, and roughly where you rank. This is the closest thing to ground truth about your search visibility that exists.

Coverage and indexing shows which of your pages Google has actually found and stored, and which ones it has skipped, and why. A page that isn't indexed can't rank at all, no matter how good it is.

Core Web Vitals shows how your site performs technically for real visitors: loading speed, visual stability, responsiveness. Google uses these as one of many ranking signals.

Search Console tells you what happened. It was never going to tell you what to do about it.

What it genuinely can't tell you

  • Why a specific competitor outranks you. It has no visibility into anyone else's site at all.
  • Whether your content is actually good. It measures behaviour, not quality.
  • What to prioritise. It hands you data, not a plan.

That last gap is the real one. Most business owners open Search Console, see a wall of numbers, and close it again with no clearer idea of what to do next than before. The data was never the missing piece. Knowing what it means for your specific site was. The guide on finding real opportunities in Search Console picks up where this leaves off.
