The five SEO mistakes I see business owners make every week
Running an agency, I look at a lot of small business websites in a normal week. The same five problems show up on almost all of them, and none of them are complicated to fix once you know they are there.
1. No title tag worth reading
Every page needs its own title, written for a human deciding whether to click, not just the business name repeated on every page. A homepage titled just “Home” or “Welcome” is a genuinely common thing to find.
2. Nobody has looked at Search Console in months
It is free, Google gives it to you directly, and it is the single best source of truth for how your site is actually performing in search. Most business owners either never set it up, or set it up once and never opened it again.
3. Pages with nothing linking to them
A page that no other page on your site links to is much harder for both visitors and Google to find. Internal linking sounds technical, but it is really just: does anything on your site point here?
4. Chasing the wrong number
Traffic totals feel satisfying, but a spike in visitors who leave immediately means nothing. The number that matters is whether the right people, searching for what you actually offer, are finding and using your site.
5. Publishing without a plan
A blog post here, a page update there, whenever there is a spare hour, adds up to years of scattered effort with no real direction. A short, prioritised list of what actually matters this month beats a long list of things done at random.
None of these take a specialist to fix. They take someone actually looking.
If even one of these sounds familiar, it is worth an afternoon to check, not a retainer to fix. The guide on the technical issues that actually matter is the fastest way to rule most of them out.
